Practice Test:

Due: Friday, May 18

. (please see below for explanation)

Test: Friday, May 18

.

Every Thursday the homework is a Spelling Practice Test. A parent or an adult is to read each spelling word to the student like it is a real test. Then the adult should go over the test with the student, marking any incorrect words. After you finish taking the test and checking it, the adult MUST sign somewhere on the paper. This is my proof that the student did the assignment correctly and did not just write the words straight from their list (not that any of my students would ever dream of doing such a thing ☺)

This assignment reduces test anxiety and helps the students to manage their studying time better. They should feel confident in the words they spelled correctly and spend the majority of their studying time on the words they missed.

Antarctica

Explorer Guide

Small Antarctica book given to you. Provides us with the basics before departing for our Antarctic Expedition.

Map of the Continent

Student made map used to plot important places and landforms we plan on visiting throughout our expedition.

Research Logs

Packet of informational logs for students to fill out upon arrival in Antarctica and during our "expedition." We will explore many locations, meet interesting people, and discover different wildlife along the way.

Departure

At the conclusion of our trip (upon arrival back in the U.S.), there will not be a "standard" test over the material. Students will be given a special assignment on behalf of the people living in Antarctica. *Details TBA*

As long as you keep your eyes and ears open during our trip, and thoroughly fill in your research logs; you will have more than enough information to complete the final assignment.

Great site to do a little Antarctica research.

The site is easy to navigate and built for student learning.

National Geographic Creature Feature: Emperor Penguin

Watch Antarctica: 90 Degrees South (PBS series)

Great 5-part series from our friends at PBS. Each video is about 10 minutes.

We also will watch parts of the series in class.

Personal Health Care Kits

This is our main service project this year. We are going to be collecting travel size personal health care items and creating personal health care kits. Please send these items in to school throughout the year. In the spring the students will sort the collected items and create personal health care kits. These will be distributed to needy organizations.

3K's Wish List

Baby Wipes

The refill kind are great!

Books

Any books that you are willing to part with

--they will always remain in the 3rd grade library

to be used and loved for years to come!

Clipboards

Any old clipboard will do.

These are great because they allow students to complete

class work in spaces around the room instead of always being stuck at their desks.
