FIRST GRADE
First graders are learning the following concepts and how they relate to the musical world:
Loud versus Soft
Fast versus Slow
High versus Low (in terms of pitch)
Long and Short sounds
We utilize a good bit of movement and singing in the classroom to experience these concepts. In addition, we are making music together with a variety of instruments and new songs that are learned from week to week.
SECOND GRADE
Second graders are learning basic music notation, such as quarter and eighth values. Students apply their newly-learned knowledge through body percussion, dance, and through playing pitch / non-pitched instruments. Additionally, students learn about music in our culture, as well as cultures abroad. We look at the roles music plays in various cultures throughout history
Students are also learning the basic do, re, mi, so, & la diatonic scale. We are developing skills towards music reading competency utilizing this method. In addition to the first graders, 2nd graders also learn through movement and dance in my room.
THIRD GRADE
In Third grade, music students are continuing to learn music notation via the recorder. We spend a good amount of the year learning to play printed rhythm and melody, as well as learning to improvise short music ideas. We also learn about musical accomaniment by having student musicians play arrangements on the pitched and non-picthed Orff percussion instruments.
Materials needed for every 3rd grade music class:
· Recorder karate packet (given by Mr Simmons)
double pocket folder with center clips (for packet)
