~Welcome to Mrs. Williams' and Ms. Pikars' Web page~

Please check out our webpage for different units the students will be learning throughout the year. Long term projects will be posted on our Related Arts calendar monthly.

Grades K-4:  We will begin the year by building our endurance through the "running unit".  Kindergarten will learn to run the length of the football field. Grades 1 and 2 will practice a 1/4 mile and grades 3 and 4 will practice a 1/2 mile. We will gradually work up to these distances to better our time, endurance level and self confidence in this area. We will be playing games focusing on spatial awareness and teamwork and practicing pushups and situps to build our strength for the fitness test in November.

Grades 5-8: These grades will work toward the goal of a mile run.  A contract will be sent home for the parents to view and discuss with their child. This will need to be signed and sent back so each child has a goal to work toward.

Grades 7-8:  These grades will also be studying a unit called "Brainwork's".  8th grade will focus on Nutrition and how it affects the body.  While 7th grade will learn the Anatomy of the Brain and how to keep it healthy.  Both classes will be tested on this material.

Physical fitness testing will happen during the month of November.  As always please encourage kids to practice their push-ups, sit-ups/crunches, flexibility and running/jogging at home. Since we only see classes once a week it makes it difficult to build strength and flexibility during that time period.

GRADING POLICY: For each P.E. class your child has the opportunity to earn a total of 6 points if he/she is following directions and participating to his/her full potential. Points will be taken from the total if there is misbehavior or nonparticipation. A point will also be taken for an absence in the class, even if it is and excused absence. A doctor's note is required if there is an injury or illness that does not allow your child to participate in P.E. class. Extra credit is given if a child writes the "vitamin verse" for the month and turns it in with their name and homeroom # at the top of the paper.  We will discuss the vitamin verse with each class at the beginning of the year.

Ms. Pikar teaches PE on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday.  Mrs. Williams teaches PE on Thursday and Friday.

All about Ms. Pikar and Mrs. Williams:

My name is Melanie Pikar and I am job sharing with Mrs. Williams in the physical education classes this year. Along with teaching P.E I will also be teaching art to students in grades 1-4! I have my degree from Eastern Kentucky University and have taught for sixteen years with the last nine of those being in physical education. I was a certified CPR instructor for two years in Cincinnati and an aerobics instructor and certified personal trainer in northern Kentucky for 6 years. I have also coached high school and elementary softball and cross country teams at schools in Ky. I enjoy being a director with Camp Laffalot camps in the summer and watching children have fun while learning about different sports. I am very active and love doing activities such as horseback riding, white water rafting and hiking with my two boys ages 15 and 12. I am looking forward to teaching your children the importance of physical activity and the positive effect it has on their lives.  I believe children learn physical skills through practice and interactive games which focus on particular skills. I believe every child has the ability to learn new skills and will do well if encouraged and praised for their effort.

My name is Mrs. Heather Williams. I attended the University of Dayton, played softball and earned a degree in Physical Education and Health. I have been teaching for ten years. Three of those years were spent at Seton High School teaching and coaching in various sports. I am actively involved in Laffalot summer camps which gives children the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of exercise through sports and activities (while still having fun!) This is my seventh year at I.H.M and I look forward to teaching your children the benefits of a healthy lifestyle. I believe that exercise can be found in a variety of ways and it can have a positive effect on a persons physical, social, and emotional well-being. In my spare time I enjoy anything outdoors. But mostly I enjoy spending time with my family and two daughters.
