Mrs.  Huitger (drop the u to pronounce it)

I am excited to be joining the IHM faculty this year as the computer teacher.  I look forward to working with the teachers and students as we use technology to enrich and extend the curriculum, and hopefully have some fun doing it too.

I have worked in education for 20 years, the last 8 years as the computer teacher at St. Ann School in Groesbeck.  My Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education is from Miami University and I am certified to teach K-8 in the State of Ohio.

I believe that the use of technology gives us an additional pathway to reach every student and his or her individual learning style.  It has the power to maintain student interest and keep them actively engaged in learning and sharing their discoveries.  It gives me great satisfaction when they cannot wait to share a WOW fact they have discovered about a topic we are researching.

Internet Safety

SAFE SURFIN'

There is technology parents can use to protect children from dangers online. There are software programs that monitor a child's online conversations, filter inappropriate sites and content, as well as prohibit them from giving out information, like last name, address and school.

Know what your children are doing online!

1. If they are "Instant Messaging" check their "buddy list" periodically to see who they are talking to. If you don't know the "child" then block them from the buddy list.

2. Know what online games they are playing-can others "Chat" with them from inside the game???? People online may not be who they say they are!!!

3. Have you checked the site called "Myspace.com" to be sure your child has not displayed their name, picture and personal information for the whole world to see. There is an age requirement.  Has your child lied about their age.  You can be sure that the predators are checking the site and the many others like it.

4. Don't have a computer with online access in your child's bedroom where you can't see what they're doing at any moment.  Children are trusting!!! You as parent need to protect them.

Filtering Software:

There is filtering software available that will prohibit a child from entering certain Internet sites. The computer room uses filtering software called N2H2, which is provided by our Internet Service Provider (http://www.n2h2.com/solutions/school/index.php). Many companies make filtering software for home use. Below are a few different examples:

CYBERsitter -

CyberPatrol -
http://www.cyberpatrol.com/

NetNanny
- http://www.net-nanny-software.com/

SafetySurf -

The sites above are just a sample of the filtering software on the market. You can search for others by going online and typing in "filtering software" in the search box on your computer.
