5th Grade
| Reading | The students will be reading from a novel or the basal text throughout the year. The students need to carry a novel of their choice for free reading. Our first novel is From the Mixed Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler. |
| Writing | We'll start with the basic paragraph focusing on topic sentence and supporting details. The students will also write in their journals several times a week. Once a month the journals will come home for you to enjoy. |
| Vocabulary/Spelling | The vocabulary comes from the novels. The
students are tested on these words midway through the book and sometimes
(depending on the number of words) at the end of the book. The students will be pretested on many common fifth grade words during the beginning weeks of school. The students will create their own list of 20 words from the master list to study during the week. The spelling tests will be on Mondays. |
| Grammar/LA | First up, types of sentences. |
| FYI'S |
Thank you for sending your child to school so well prepared. They had ALL the supplies we requested and big smiles on their faces! We're off to a very good start! Each month the students have the opportunity to order books from Scholastic book clubs. I encourage the students to order not only because the prices are good, but we earn free books for the classroom with each order. Besides letting the students know in class, I'll put the due date for orders on the calendar. |
Interested in volunteer work? Would you like to help your child's class and teacher by volunteering? Crayons to Computers is a non-profit organization that accepts donations from area businesses for the benefit of teachers. For every 3 hours of volunteer work I do, or a parent does for me, I receive a ticket to shop, FOR FREE! If interested, please email me and I'll get you the number to the volunteer coordinator. (It's actually fun!) Thanks!
