DECEMBER
The whole of science is nothing more than a refinement of everyday
thinking. ~Albert Einstein

Parents of 5R homeroom students !!
Make sure to ask your students what they learned while they were at school. Every day they will be filling out a learning log, which will be kept in their accordion, where they will record four things that they learned that day. Every day that they have four written down before they leave, they will get stamped. 20 stamps will result in a small reward.
5th Grade Science
We will be starting our unit on Atoms and
Molecules. The students will learn how these tiny particles come together
to make up everything in our world! We will be making our own periodic
table, making a model of a Helium atom, singing songs, and acting out the
location of subatomic particles. All of these activities are designed to
reinforce what the students read about in their text, and hear from class
discussions.
Each day when the students enter the room, they start with a brief activity to get them started. These will be kept in their Science notebook and collected occasionally throughout the trimester. Please make sure that you are keeping current with these activities.
Parents, please check progress book on a regular basis. Even with papers coming home on Tuesday, there could be additional information about your child's grade.
Students were instructed on how to restate a question in an answering sentence. All answers and homework in science must restate the question, be written in cursive, have the proper heading and set-up, and be written in a complete sentence. Failure to do so will result in points deducted from an assignment. Students will be told in advance if there are exceptions to this.
6th Grade Science
We will
begin our unit on Rocks. We will be exploring the rock cycle in depth by
doing an activity that shows how rocks can change. We will also be
learning about the three types of rock, where they are found, and what
applications they have in our lives. The material we are learning is brand
new to the students, so the year is going to probably become more challenging
for some, as most of what we have done so far includes review.

Students in 6S, please remember that if you choose not take your book home to do homework, and your on-line access is not available for some reason, I will NOT accept that as a valid excuse for not having your homework. Mrs. Ray has been a member of IHM parish for
29 years, and has been teaching for 13 years. Eleven of those years have
been spent at IHM teaching the fifth grade. In addition, Mrs. Ray has
worked professionally as an educator of teachers at IDC training center, and as
a presenter of workshops at the state, local and national levels. Mrs.
Ray has taught children of all age levels, but really enjoys her fifth
graders. She believes that all children can learn, and that they all have
strengths and weaknesses that help them to do so. She enjoys the
challenge of reaching each of her students and facilitating their learning
processes.
