NOVEMBER!

HAPPY THANKSGIVING AND MANY BLESSINGS!

SCIENCE FIELD TRIPS THIS YEAR; GRADE 8: TOYOTA & LEXINGTON,  GRADE 7: ST. ANNE'S, THOMAS MORE BIOLOGICAL STATION

GRADE 7 GRADE 8
 Elements #1-15 Quiz 11/21

The students have been looking through the microscopes these days. First, they had to learn the parts of the microscope then they observed cotton, wool, salt crystals and a prepared slide. Next, came the real test, observing the elodea plant and the ir cheek cells! Wow! There was a buzz in the room as they saw the details of all these items. Fascination ias a good word! See pictures below!

The culmination of this chapter is constructing an animal or plant cell using any materials they would like to use. They are very creative! Stay tuned for pictures!

Next, the violent viruses! The  students are amazed how these viruses multiply so quickly, change their  hereditary material making it hard for scientists to find ways to cure them.

ELEMENTS   Elements #51-75 Quiz 11-14,      #76-118 Quiz 11-25

Elements! Elements! More elements! Can you tell the 8th graders are now studying atoms, the facts about the periodic table and eventually mixtures and  compounds too.

They listened to Tom Lehrer's "The Element Song". They tried to sing along be it was next to impossible!  They tried again without the music and made it to the second line but that was enough for them. Wow! How did he do it? The challenge is theirs to sing it for the class but so far no one has come forth!

Soon the junior high hall will be adorned with the names of the students done according to the chemical symbols. They will try their hand at "Elements can be punny". Here's one: policeman. ( Copper; Cu)  Who said science is not fun???

                                                                                              OUR CELL MODELS!

GRADE 8

PROBLEM SOLVING IN THE SCIENCE LAB!  HOW DO CERTAIN SUBSTANCES REACT TO HEAT AND VINEGAR? DO THEY FORM MIXTURES OR COMPOUNDS?  IS IT A PHYSICAL OR CHEMICAL CHANGE?      WOW! THESE BUNSEN BURNERS ARE COOL!   HOW TO LIGHT A MATCH 101!   THE THINGS WE LEARN IN SCIENCE!

MISS ESPOSITO'S BIOGRAPHY
In 1976 (in R.I.) I  graduated with a Bachelor of Science  Degree in Physical Education K-12.  I began  teaching, in the Catholic School System,  First Grade and PE  in grades 1-8  in September of that year. In 1977,  I began teaching Fourth Grade, PE and Science(4-8). I received my Master's Degree in Elementary Education in1982.  Shortly thereafter,  I began taking courses in science and received my certification in that field in 1986.  I have been involved in organizing Science Fairs since 1978 as well as judging them.

In 1993, I moved to Kentucky and taught 7th and 8th grade science for 7 years in the Diocese of Covington. During that time I received certification in Forestry and Conservation. I was involved in outdoor education programs and worked with the Kenton County Conservation District. In 2000 I taught 8th grade science at Holmes Junior High for one semester before coming to Immaculate Heat of Mary School in January 2001

MY TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

I believe every child is unique and is a reflection of God's love in the world.  As a teacher I would like for each child to become the best person he/she can be spiritually, academically and in the everyday challenges of life.  I would like to see each student develop self-confidence and to grow in respect for themselves, others, and the world around them.
