WEEK OF: MAY 6 - 10, 2024
ELA: SKILLS
We have completed our skills books! Wow! What a great job! This week we will be working on reading books by the same author. I have chosen Cynthia Rylant, who is a prolific writer of over 100 children’s books! We will read and compare and contrast her books. We will also continue working on our poetry books.
ELA: KNOWLEDGE
In Knowledge, we are starting our last unit called “Fighting for a Cause.” We will be learning about famous people who worked for civil rights and human rights through nonviolence. Some of these people include: Susan B. Anthony, Rosa Parks, Eleanor Roosevelt, Jackie Robinson, Mary McLeod Bethune, and Cesar Chavez.
RELIGION
In Religion, we are working on Circle of Grace. We will use a symbol of a traffic light to determine if situations are green (they make us feel comfortable), yellow (this might not be a safe situation), and red (these are definitely not safe). The kids will identify 3 trusted adults besides their parents who they can talk to about yellow or red situations. They will also learn about secrets and which secrets should be kept/not kept.
MATH
There will be a Unit 3 Test in Math on Wednesday. I am sending home copies of a practice test today, one completed and one the kids can do on their own. The test on Wednesday is very similar to this practice test. On Thursday, we will start a new unit on measurement using inches and feet.
SOCIAL STUDIES
In Social Studies, we will be finishing our unit on Using our Resources. The test on Tuesday will be taken as a whole class or with partners. There is no need to study. On Wednesday, we will start Unit 5, “A World of Many People.” This unit is about immigration, different cultures, customs, and traditions. Many of the ideas in this unit will be familiar to the kids!
