The Junior High had an incredible visit from Mo Kelly of Saint Vincent de Paul. She led the students in Take a Step, an activity that allowed our students to see the experiences and causes of local poverty in a new way. Our students were deeply moved to take action, wanting to help our neighbors in need. Ms. Kelly shared with us that due to lack of transportation and resources, many of the neighbors in need are not able to carry with them all of the items they are eligible to receive when they visit SVDP. The items simply become too heavy to carry in typical grocery bags when they are carried by one person walking long distances.  As a result, they see neighbors choosing to take fewer items than they both qualify for and need. SVDP has discovered a solution that allows people to more easily and comfortably carry more; T-shirt bags. Reusable T-shirt bags allow for several bags worth of food and donated goods to be carried over the shoulder, making transporting it much easier, resulting in people being able to get more of what they need. The bags are a huge hit at SVDP, and neighbors are always asking for them, so there is always a need for more. Our Junior High students have been moved to make these homemade, no sew bags to be distributed at SVDP. In the brief time since our visit with Ms Kelly, students have flooded Mrs. Ramundo’s classroom with T-shirts which we are transforming into bags. So far our 7th and 8th graders have already made nearly 250 t-shirt bags in our classroom, praying over each one as we make it. We plan to continue to create as many reusable bags as t-shirts we are able to gather, knot by knot, using both our hands and our hearts to help the people in our community. We look forward to our students with their families making the trip to SVDP’s food bank to help our neighbors shop using the bags that we have made. If you have any T-shirts (adult size only please) that you would like to donate, please send them to our Junior High religion classes in care of Mrs. Ramundo. Thank you for your continued, prayerful support.
