ExCEL Students Attend Invention Convention 2014

Nine IHM ExCEL students competed in the 2014 Invention Convention Southwest Regional Finals presented by Time Warner Cable Connect a Million Minds, on Saturday, April 26 at the Cincinnati Museum Center.

“165 Aspiring Inventors to Showcase Creativity and Ingenuity…” The press release for the event began with this question - “How would you like to read a book without having to hold it?” Our very own IHM 8th grader Benjamin K. had answered that question with his Libeo (Latin for book) prototype! On the morning of April 25th, he and Margot L. traveled to the studios of Fox 19 and WKRC 12 (Star 64) where they represented the Invention Convention on live television. Margot, a 5th grader, explained her PopTab 2000 as a pocket tool to open pop bottles without breaking your nails or cutting yourself.

Two teams of 6th graders competed at the Invention Convention Tara R. and Samantha W. solved the organizational problems posed to them with their Box-its (brand) Backpack and Clos-its. Marie S. and Megan S. developed sports shin and ankle guards that protect and repel odor with the Crus Ped Vestis (Latin for ankle shin apparel).

When we discovered that am unwanted visitor had been in the ExCEL modular, 8th grader Adam B. worked to solve this problem with his Electric Mouse Trap. 4th graders Ethan K. solved a tool accessibility problem with his Handiman’s Glove, and Michael A. developed the idea for a Smart Camera that projects holographic images in videos.

The Invention Convention teaches creative problem-solving skills, innovative thought processing and 21st century critical thinking to students from 54 Ohio counties.
