Meet Mrs. Gonos

My name is Kathleen Gonos.  I am so excited to be teaching 5th grade math and social studies at IHM this year.  This will be my 18th year in education.  I began my career as a 5th grade teacher in Bexley, Ohio, and then moved to Illinois where I worked in special education before becoming a 6th grade teacher.  I, then, was a stay-at-home mom for many years, before heading back to the classroom to teach preschool, and then 3rd and 5th grade in the New Richmond Schools.  Most recently, I was a math specialist for HCESC and worked here at IHM in grades
K - 3. I also began a math tutoring business and have tutored many IHM students in math over the past year. I am very passionate about mathematics education and enjoy learning new ways to challenge and engage students in their conceptual understanding of mathematics.

I graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in elementary education and am a HUGE Buckeye fan.  My mom, my sisters, my husband, and all three of my children are alumni.  I have two grown sons who live in Salt Lake City, Utah; both are in industrial design.  My daughter is moving to Cape Cod to pursue her dream of being a research scientist in microbiology and environmental science.  We have lived in Anderson for the past 19 years.

I look forward to partnering with you in your child's education.  We are going to have a fabulous year in 5th grade!

What a wonderful school year with amazing students!  Thank you to all of you for your support in my first year here at IHM.  Have a great summer!

Math

Math Summer Suggestion

  • iReady My Path (available through 7/31) 30 minutes 2x per week.
  • Practice facts and fractions with flash cards 15 minutes 2x per week.
  • Have your students estimate a total cost at dinner or the grocery store.
  • Cook or bake (challenge: double or half the recipe!).
  • Identify or draw different types of shapes around you.

Also, Khan Academy is a free resource that is a great way to practice content in math. You can choose 5th or 6th grade math content. There are videos to learn new skills. This would be great for advanced math students to work on the 6th grade content, so they are ready for 7th grade content. https://www.khanacademy.org/.
